Beginning a new chapter in its service to Suffolk County, Long Island Community Hospital is now NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, becoming the top-ranked health system’s seventh inpatient facility and offering a broad range of new services with an unprecedented level of quality. Since its affiliation with NYU Langone Health began in March 2022, the hospital has undergone a remarkable transformation. It has added robotic surgery and gynecologic oncology; enhanced vascular, surgical, gastroenterological, and orthopedic services; and improved key outcomes such as length of stay and infection rates.
“Since affiliating with NYU Langone three years ago, our newest hospital has made incredible strides in quality and safety to better serve patients in Suffolk County,” said Robert I. Grossman, MD, CEO of NYU Langone Health and dean of NYU Grossman School of Medicine. “The completion of this merger, along with the expansion of our outpatient locations in the local community, marks a new era of healthcare exceptionalism on Long Island. My sincere thanks to all our colleagues—both those who were with the former Long Island Community Hospital and those from NYU Langone who helped bring the hospital into the fold—for their hard work and dedication to make this day possible.”
The patient experience and quality of care have significantly improved since the hospital’s affiliation. Notably, surgical cases and other operating room procedures have increased by more than 50 percent, the length of stay has decreased, hospital-acquired conditions have decreased by 25 percent, and the time to see a provider in the emergency department has declined by nearly 70 percent. The hospital also introduced infusion services for cancer patients and people with neurological diseases, resulting in 4,000 new visits since implementation in May 2023, with plans to expand this service in the future.
“Thanks to a significant investment and support from the entire health system—as well as the longtime generosity of philanthropic partners like the Knapp family—the range and quality of services offered in and around Patchogue have grown exponentially, furthering our mission to consistently deliver the safest, most innovative, and highest-quality care to the community,” said Marc S. Adler, MD, senior vice president and chief of hospital operations at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk. “As part of a seamlessly integrated system, we are fully equipped to provide comprehensive, patient-centered services across a range of specialties to meet the growing needs of Suffolk County for generations to come.”
“The merger of these two incredible organizations is a critical moment for the future of healthcare on Long Island. More than 400,000 residents in the region will now have expanded access to world-class services and physicians, continuing NYU Langone’s legacy of medical excellence. I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the Long Island community,” said U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
“NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk represents a direct investment in our communities, bringing new resources and improved services to Long Islanders. Ensuring that families across Suffolk County’s South Shore have access to quality healthcare and strengthening local care for the future must always remain a priority,” said Congressman Andrew Garbarino (NY-02).
“Congratulations to NYU Langone Health on bringing another top-notch facility into their network. This milestone is a testament to NYU Langone’s unwavering commitment to providing outstanding healthcare services to our community. We share their vision for the future of healthcare on Long Island that prioritizes innovation, accessibility, and excellence in patient care. We look forward to seeing the positive impact NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk will bring to our region for many years to come,” said State Senator Dean Murray.
“Putting the two extraordinary healthcare organizations together is a win-win for patients and our community. The hospital has served us for generations and will be with us for many more, with the best in medical care and management,” said State Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano.
NYU Langone has made significant investments in the hospital’s services, infrastructure, and technology platforms:
- significant investment in operating room technology, including robotic equipment enhancing gynecologic, orthopedic, and vascular procedures, as well as new facilities to expand services and increase capacity
- implementation of Epic’s electronic health record system, which allows for a seamless continuum of care across ambulatory sites and the entire NYU Langone network for improved patient experience
- hired more than 100 physicians and other advanced providers since affiliation, dramatically expanding care across a broad range of specialties
- the reopening of the inpatient psychiatry unit and continued support of outpatient behavioral health services
- expanded trauma capabilities, with designation as a Provisional Level 2 Adult Trauma Center by the New York State Department of Health
- installation of MyWall digital tablets in patient rooms, providing leading-edge technology through the duration of patients’ stay
NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is the latest facility to benefit from its integration with a world-class academic medical center where more than 800 key metrics and outcomes are constantly monitored system-wide. More than 400,000 residents in the region now have access to the full spectrum of NYU Langone’s renowned services, including the convenience of dozens of outpatient sites throughout Suffolk County.
In addition to NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, construction has started on a new ambulatory surgery center on Patchogue’s Main Street, further improving access to specialized outpatient surgical services for the community. This state-of-the-art facility, with six operating rooms and four procedure rooms, is set to open in 2026. The center will provide a wide range of surgical procedures that do not require a hospital stay, all within a convenient, patient-friendly environment.
