As a cardiovascular radiologist at NYU Langone, I am dedicated to enhancing patient care through advanced imaging techniques.

I specialize in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose and guide the treatment of heart and blood vessel diseases. I have been involved with MRI since its very early days. Remarkably, it’s continuing to evolve rapidly, becoming ever more powerful and capable of revealing structural and functional changes in the body that are difficult to see with other techniques.

In addition to my clinical work, I perform research seeking to develop both better imaging methods and more powerful ways of analyzing images, with the goal of developing a deeper understanding of cardiovascular disease, in order to treat it more effectively.

One particular area of my research focus is the use of magnetization tagged imaging, which allows us to directly see and measure how different regions within the heart wall are moving with MRI, and to study how this motion changes in different diseases, in order to guide therapy. Collaborating with computer science experts, I am also working on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to make complex image analysis more practical for clinical use, ultimately enhancing patient care.

Before attending medical school and specializing in cardiovascular radiology, my educational journey began with studying physics and astrophysics. This technical background has helped to prepare me for my research activities, and the clinical use of our technically-based imaging methods.

Overall, each set of images that I evaluate clinically presents a unique challenge. It is deeply rewarding when I can use patients’ images to help improve their care. While research is a much longer-term activity than clinically interpreting medical images, it is also deeply rewarding when I can contribute something new that may be able to help patients.

Research Summary

Heart disease, particularly related to ischemia and infarction, remains the principal cause of morbidity and death in the Western World. MRI and CT have the potential of playing significant roles in the evaluation of the heart, both for research and clinical applications.

The Cardiac Imaging and Analysis Laboratory (CARDIAL), under the direction of Leon Axel, is a multidisciplinary group dedicated to the development and evaluation of new cardiac imaging methods, particularly those involving quantitative characterization of such physiologic aspects as function and perfusion. This includes development of novel MRI cardiac imaging methods such as tagged MRI for regional cardiac function analysis and rapid quantitative imaging for perfusion studies, and associated programs for image analysis, as well as research on their basic and clinical applications.
