Though it only accounts for 3 percent of all cancers, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Early detection and screening to identify genes that confer a high risk for pancreatic cancer can improve survival, Diane M. Simeone, MD, director of the Pancreatic Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, tells What’s Health Got To Do With It?.
“A really important message to everybody out there is to just make sure if you have someone in your family that has pancreatic cancer to seek information from an expert,” says Dr. Simeone, who is the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Professor of Surgery in the and professor in the at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. “This is the kind of cancer you want to be seen by people who know what they’re doing because of the complexity of the cancer.”
