A urologist internationally renowned for his expertise in treating and preventing kidney stones, Esteban Emiliani Sanz, MD, PhD, has joined NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn and NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s , which is ranked No. 2 in its specialty by U.S. News & World Report. Dr. Emiliani Sanz will be a clinical professor and chief of endourology, a specialty that covers ureter narrowing and stone diseases of the kidneys, ureter, and bladder. He was previously a clinical associate professor and urologist in the endourology and urolithiasis unit at Fundació Puigvert, Autonomous University of Barcelona.
As chief of endourology, Dr. Emiliani Sanz’s key priority is integrating new technologies into the operating room to provide the most effective treatments for patients. He will also offer personalized metabolic evaluations to uncover the root cause of kidney stones. Using this information, Dr. Emiliani Sanz and his team will implement prevention strategies tailored to every individual patient’s lifestyle, including dietary recommendations, supplements, and, if necessary, targeted medications.
“Kidney stones offer a window into improving a patient’s overall health and wellbeing,” said Dr. Emiliani Sanz. “Although they are a disease, they also can indicate a greater health problem that we can help manage. My goal at NYU Langone is to empower patients with knowledge and tools to take control of their health, reduce their risk of future stones, and enhance their quality of life.”
Dr. Emiliani Sanz offers both minimally invasive and noninvasive treatment options personalized to each patient’s condition, because a universal approach to kidney stone treatment is not always effective. Options include medication to dissolve stones painlessly without surgery, a laser that turns kidney stones into dust, and less-invasive surgery for large kidney stones to reduce recovery time.
His approach to patient care is focused on minimizing disruption to patients’ lives while optimizing their outcomes. He leverages the latest technologies, including minimal-radiation imaging and simple laboratory tests to treat patients quickly and effectively.
“Dr. Emiliani Sanz will propel our institution, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, forward,” said Bret J. Rudy, MD, executive vice president and chief of hospital operations at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. “Our team in Brooklyn is excited to work alongside him to offer the Sunset Park community exceptional personalized care.”
Research plays a central role in Dr. Emiliani Sanz’s work. He is actively involved in several international organizations shaping the future of urologic care and has published 130 articles in urology journals to date. In 2024, The Endourological Society awarded him the Arthur Smith Award, one of the most prestigious honors in the field, for achieving international recognition within the first 10 years of his career.
“Dr. Emiliani Sanz’s precise approach to care will greatly enhance patients’ quality of life once they leave the hospital,” said Herbert Lepor, MD, the Martin Spatz Chair and chief of the Department of Urology, and professor in the Department of Urology and the . “His contributions to the field as an international urology researcher, surgeon, and academic are truly unparalleled.”
